37 Advocates Struck Off: BCI Cracks Down on Fake Credentials in Delhi

Date: 02.09.2025

The legal profession in Delhi is undergoing a significant clean-up, as the Bar Council of India (BCI) and the Bar Council of Delhi (BCD) intensify their drive against advocates enrolled using fraudulent credentials :

  • This concerted effort resulted in the removal of 37 “fake Advocates” from the rolls of advocates in the region of Delhi alone from the starting of the year till now. The action is part of a broader, ongoing national initiative designed to ensure the legal community maintains the highest standards of professionalism and public trust.
  • The primary reasons for the disbarment of these individuals centered on serious issues concerning forged or fake credentials and deliberate misrepresentation during the initial enrollment process with the Bar Council. Beyond outright fraud, removals were also enforced against those who failed to meet basic regulatory standards, specifically for not engaging in the active practice of law or for neglecting to comply with the mandatory verification processes instituted by the BCI.
  • This decisive action is fundamentally aimed at protecting the public and the legal system as a whole from unethical and illegal practices perpetrated by unqualified individuals posing as advocates.
  • If a member of the public suspects an advocate of professional misconduct, including practicing without a valid license, they have the right to file a formal complaint with the respective State Bar Council (like the Bar Council of Delhi) for investigation.
