His father also actively participated in local self-governance and public administration, serving as a Member of the District Development Committee and as a Panchayat Member in his native village.
After completing his legal education and obtaining his LL.B. degree from the prestigious Government Law College Ernakulam — among the earliest five-year law course batches — he commenced his legal practice under the guidance of Adv. Issac Thomas at the Parur District Court and all other courts at Ernakulam in 1990. During the formative years of his legal career, he developed substantial exposure to criminal, civil and litigation practice.
Subsequently later in the professional life, he joined the chambers of the renowned constitutional lawyer Late Adv. Lily Thomas. He practised with her for a considerable period, and during their long professional association, they jointly argued numerous important constitutional, civil, and public law matters before various courts, including the Supreme Court of India. During the period of 1991-1993 he pursued higher legal studies in an LL.M. degree from the University of Mumbai in Comparative Constitutional Law.
For a period, Adv. Saju Jakob also proceeded to Europe/Germany/UK to pursue further professional qualifications, where he completed his international LL.M. degree with distinction (summa cum laude) at the University of Cologne, became an English Solicitor in England & Wales, and later commenced practice connected with Indian and cross-border legal matters in Europe as an Indian lawyer and European solicitor-oriented practitioner. He has also taken part in international seminars on Private and Public International Law at the Peace Palace in the Netherlands and has delivered lectures on Indian law at various international forums. He is accordingly a renowned Indian legal expert in Europe.
Despite establishing a successful international professional trajectory abroad, Adv. Saju Jakob returned to India upon the request and guidance of his mentor, Late Adv. Lily Thomas. Recognising his commitment, professional integrity, constitutional vision, and legal acumen, Ms. Lily Thomas entrusted him with the responsibility of carrying forward her ideals, legal philosophy, and professional legacy. Since then, he has continued to uphold and advance the constitutional traditions, legal values, and professional standards associated with the chambers and legacy of Late Adv. Lily Thomas.
On 10 December 2019, Late Adv. Lily Thomas passed away at the residence of Adv. Saju Jakob in Delhi. In her memory and as a mark of deep professional and personal respect, he subsequently transformed the home into an office and memorial professional space preserving her books, legal collections, photographs, and professional heritage.
