Advocate Lily Isabel Thomas, a fierce yet warm lady, who had always considered the Constitution of India as her Bible, has dedicated her entire life to uphold and protect the spirit of the Constitution amongst as many people as possible.

She never hesitated to even go against even the highest authorities, if necessary, to protect the human rights of people, who she truly considered as the source of our sovereign, secular, socialist, democratic and Republic State.

In a true sense, justice was her religion, fraternity was her faith, freedom was her worship and equality was her goal.

She was the product of a social revolution where millions of people sacrificed their lives to attain a nation that goes by the constitutional values. She could clearly see the picture of India as described in the Preamble of the Constitution of India and with that vision in her mind, she filed several Public Interest Litigations and even did numerous pro bono cases for impoverished people. Her mission has always been to move forward the spirit of social revolution and to spread that spirit to the entire nation.

Her vision and mission could be summed up in the words of Shri Acharya Kriplani,

“If we want to use democracy as only a legal, constitutional and formal advice, we shall fail. The whole country should understand the moral, the spiritual and the mystic implications of the word ‘democracy’.”
“The Preamble to the Constitution is not just a piece of legal drafting or a matter of mere formality. It is a code of conduct. It is a lesson in morality and ethics- to be learnt by heart and to be practised. It contains philosophy, full of spiritualism and mysticism. It has a rhythm and message of ringing bells. Do we have ears to listen, eyes to read and hearts to understand?”
She was the true follower of Jawaharlal Nehru’s words which stated “it is not a law, but is something that breathes life in human minds.”
