The Hon’ble Kerala High Court was informed on November 6 that the Bar Council of India (BCI) has given interim approval to create two supernumerary seats (extra seats) under the Transgender category in all law colleges in Kerala.
The approval applies to both three-year LL.B and five-year integrated LL.B courses for the academic year 2025–26.
This decision came after the Hon’ble Court’s earlier order on October 24, 2025, which had asked the BCI to consider the State Government’s proposal for reservation in law colleges for transgender students.
The Hon’ble Court appreciated the move, saying it was “heartening to note” that the BCI responded positively to promote inclusivity in legal education.
The Government Pleader informed the Court that the next step is to get formal approval from the universities affiliated with these law colleges to officially add the new seats.
Since the petitioner in the case had sought admission to the Government Law College, Kozhikode, the Court directed the petitioner to implead (add) all universities in Kerala to make the order applicable across the State.
The case is posted on Friday (November 7) for further consideration.
