No New Law Colleges for 3 Years in India!
The Bar Council of India (‘BCI’) notified the Rules of Legal Education-Moratorium (Three-Year Moratorium) to impose a complete ban on the establishment of new law colleges. These Rules came into force on 20-8-2025 and will be applicable for a continuous period of three years.
Key takeaways:-
- Bar Council of India imposes a 3-year freeze on opening new law colleges.
- Existing colleges cannot introduce new sections, courses, or batches without BCI’s written approval.
- Existing colleges face stricter audits and compliance checks, surprise inspections & complaint redressal to curb malpractice.
- With nearly 2,000 Centers of Legal Education already operating, BCI believes India has adequate institutional capacity. The emphasis now must be on consolidation, faculty strength, and academic quality..
- Institutions failing to meet BCI standards risk derecognition or shutdown.
- BCI aims to stop the unchecked growth of poor-quality law colleges and arbitrary approvals and unchecked NOCs/affiliations.
